Commonly
referred to as LEVs, low speed electric vehicles are
proving popular in areas where speeds are restricted and where noise control
and air quality are important to those nearby. These areas include:
·
Neighborhoods with children
·
Retirement communities
·
Golf course communities
·
Resorts and resort communities
·
Amusement parks
·
Factory, warehousing and distribution facilities
·
Airports
·
Military bases
·
Schools, colleges and universities
·
Construction sites
·
Film and television production sets
Low speed
electric vehicles evolved from the increased use of golf carts as a way to
putter around neighborhoods over the past few decades. Drivers in planned
neighborhoods sought an easy way to visit neighbors and friends and make trips
to community parks and pools without having to use their full cars and trucks.
Golf carts proved an almost perfect choice, as they were far more fuel
efficient and quieter, but lacked safety features such as seat belts, horns,
brake and tail lamps and windshield wipers.
Federal laws now
require that low speed electric vehicles have all the basic safety features,
and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration allows low speed
electric vehicles, neighborhood electric vehicles, electric utility vehicles
and street legal golf carts to operate on city streets and roadways with posted
speed limits of up to 35 miles per hour.
Not only are low
speed electric vehicles a major step up from golf carts in safety features,
they also offer improved functionality and style. At GatorMoto
UV in Jacksonville, FL, low speed electric vehicles range from the
two-passenger or four-passenger, open Bubble Buddy perfect for couples and
families to a 22-passenger shuttle that's great for transporting guests around
resorts, amusement parks and other tourist spots. Our 14-passenger, enclosed
Electro Transit Buddy, plus a 15-passenger shuttle that pulls a 14-passenger
trailer are designed specifically for parking lot shuttle operations. Other
options include light duty payload utility vehicles with lifts for gardeners
and maintenance personnel; delivery LEVs with
insulated boxes that work beautifully for resort room service operations; and
open shuttle LEVs (including two styled after antique
Roadsters of the 1910s and 1920s) that offer easy entry and stylish travel for
guests of resorts, amusement parks, office and school camuses
and more. Several of our GatorMoto UV low speed
electric vehicles are outfitted specifically for security, police and medical
emergency functions.
Low speed
electric vehicles plug into any standard electrical outlet and cost pennies on
the dollar in energy costs compared to full size vehicle fuel costs. LEVs emit much less carbon gas than do gasoline-fueled
vehicles and many qualify for federal and state tax benefits. In some states,
low-speed electric vehicles are subject to the same regulatory requirements as
other vehicles operating on public roads, so you'll need to check with your
state agency to learn insurance, licensing and vehicle emissions inspection
requirements.
