Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500 Defines LSVs

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was challenged with the task of categorizing a low-speed vehicle (LSV). The conventional golf cart, like GatorMoto UV's basic 2-passenger electric cart, has a top speed of around 12 to 15 mph on a fully charged battery. Once the world saw how golf course communities used the traditional golf cart as an environmentally friendly solution for low-speed transportation, the manufacturers of electric vehicles designed vehicles for more powerful electric motors with a top speed of 20 to 25 mph. The NHTSA realized the modified golf cart did not belong in the same classification as higher speed green cars. Today, the NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500 sets the following requirements for a vehicle to qualify for Low-Speed Vehicle status:

• LSVs must be a four-wheel vehicle
• LSVs must be able to obtain a speed of 20 mph within one mile
• LSVs must be incapable of top speeds above 25 mph
• LSVs must have a Gross Weight of Less than 2500 lbs
• LSVs must be equipped with seat belts

Many communities allow LSVs to operate during daylight hours without installing lights.
